Rosacea, Spider Veins and Capillaries

Rosacea, Spider Veins and Capillaries
Cooper City, Davie, Weston and Pembroke Pines

Research has found that Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is the most effective treatment for clearing spider veins, red capillaries and rosacea from your face.  Much stronger than any spa treatment, our ICON IPL treatments are safely administered exclusively by a medical practitioner. The ICON IPL system used in these treatments works by delivering low-energy light directly into the affected skin, maximizing safety and patient comfort.

A recent clinical study showed 83% of patients experienced reduced redness and 75% had less flushing and improved skin texture. Though not technically a laser procedure, IPL does work similarly to a laser by harnessing the power of light to destroy pigmented and damaged skin cells, prompting your body to replace them with new growth of cells and collagen. Non-abrasive and non-invasive, this quick, convenient treatment will allow you to immediately return to your normal activities, with no downtime required.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin disease that is characterized by redness of the skin. Over time, the skin may thicken, or the patient may have acne-like breakouts. Rosacea may also affect the eyes.

This disease cannot be cured, and it is often affected by triggers like weather or specific foods. Treatment is aimed at reducing the inflammation characteristic of the disease, and many patients enjoy years between flare-ups when under a dermatologist’s care.

What Causes Rosacea?

Rosacea is thought to be a genetic condition with certain groups more predisposed to it. The majority of sufferers are Caucasian, female and over the age of 30. Individual triggers vary, but most are related to the weather and the person’s diet. It’s especially important for those with rosacea to protect their skin from the elements and to keep track of the foods they eat so as to avoid future episodes.

How Ageless Medical can help with Rosacea

Rosacea causes red skin and bumps that can damage a person’s self-esteem along with causing physical pain. While it isn’t understood what precisely causes rosacea, treatment options are aimed at reducing the inflammation it causes. Typically, this is done with over-the-counter antibiotics, either topical or oral.

However, in recent years, IPL rosacea treatment has been making some headway in the medical field as an alternative to conventional therapies. The procedure uses targeted wavelengths of light to change the overall appearance of the skin and is performed on an outpatient basis.

Proven effective since the ’90s, IPL treatment, or intense pulsed light, treats signs of rosacea like persistent redness caused from dilated blood vessels or thickened skin. The efficacy of IPL treatment is remarkable, and this treatment option is approved by the FDA. Patients typically report significantly decreased redness after just one treatment.

While the procedure is relatively simple, patients should look for Medical Aesthetic practices who are well-versed in this kind of therapy. It is also important to note that IPL treatment is not a cure for rosacea, but can diminish its appearance for a lengthy period of time. Re-treatments are most often required to keep the rosacea under control.

Facial Spider Veins

Ageless Medical performs both Sclerotherapy and IPL Vein Treatments . Both treatments are very effective and our experienced practitioners can help you determine which treatment is right for you.

IPL Facial Vein Treatment

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an effective treatment for unsightly facial spider veins. IPL works by selectively damaging or destroying small spider veins and small vascular birthmarks. Two to four treatments may be required depending on the number and size of the lesions.

IPL vein therapy is a non-invasive treatment for spider veins and can also treat reticular veins, age spots, and sun damage. Spider veins are treated by delivering a concentrated pulse of light. The light generates heat and damages the blood vessel walls. The veins shrink and disappear as a result of treatment. IPL penetrates the unwanted vessel but does not damage or scar the surrounding tissue.

Frequently asked questions about rosacea, redness and facial spider veins.

What is the ICON IPL treatment for broken blood vessels and redness?

A treatment with the ICON IPL involves the targeted use of low-energy light to treat redness and rosacea. Similar to a laser procedure, IPL is a quick, in-office therapy that allows your Ageless Medical practitioner to provide powerful results in a minimally invasive procedure.

Can I have the treatment after sun exposure?

No.  If you had a day of sun exposure (a day at the beach or on a boat) you need to wait 3-4 weeks before having any IPL treatment.  Even if you used sunscreen, you must wait for the pigment in your skin to return to normal.

Will I leave the office all red and blotchy after the treatment?

Some patients do experience redness directly after their treatment. This redness fades pretty quickly (within the evening), but after every IPL treatment, our staff will apply a soothing cream and tinted sunscreen.

How many treatments should I have to see the best results?

Most patients with only uneven or spotty pigmentation, and/or broken capillaries will see complete results in one treatment. Those seeking to treat rosacea will need ongoing treatments until their symptoms resolve, which can take months, depending upon their reaction to the treatments. Certain skin types will see results faster.  In particular, those with the fairest skin see results the fastest.

When will I start to see results from my treatment and what should I expect in terms of healing with my treatment?

You might see some redness the day of your treatment. This should completely resolve overnight, leaving your skin back to normal by morning. Your pigmented spots will be darker at first, but around 10-14 days they will shed the damaged cells and heal without pigmentation. You may also experience some light bruising as your broken capillaries clear away, but this is very rare. YOU MUST WEAR SUNSCREEEN after this procedure. Not doing so may cause you to have an adverse reaction, making pigmented spots even darker, or more widespread. You will have sunscreen applied before you leave the office, and we can recommend sunscreen and other products to use through your treatments. If you choose to use your own sunscren, anything overr 40 SPF is fine. The upside to wearing sunscreen it that it will also help you to prolong the effects of the treatment, protecting your investment.

How Does Skintel Melanin Reader™ Help With My Treatment?

The Skintel Melanin Reader™ is an FDA-approved device that provides a level of detailed information about your skin that is otherwise difficult, if not impossible, to achieve.  Effective laser and IPL treatment relies on an in-depth understanding of your skin type in order to determine the best settings for your cosmetic treatments.  Without the level of detail provided by the device, medical practitioners use a degree of professional judgment that may lead to less than optimum results.  The reader works by taking measurements from several test areas on your skin, and this information is used to determine the optimum settings for the laser system that will best meet your cosmetic goals.

Sclerotherapy to Treat Body Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is a method of veins treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins. The process includes injecting the asclera sclerosing agent into the vein, which will cause the vein to shrink or collapse.

It works by damaging the endothelium, the cells lining the inside of blood vessels. This causes blood platelets to attach to the lining of the vessels, eventually cellular debris and platelets cause the blood vessel to clot. Over time, the clotted vein will be replaced with tissue and the vein will not allow blood to flow freely through it, which will force the body to absorb it.

Typically, a sclerotherapy session takes 15 to 45 minutes. One injection is usually administered per inch with multiple injections per session.

Frequently asked questions about sclerotherapy and body spider veins.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins, or telanglectasias of the legs, are small purple or red veins which can form anywhere on the legs from the ankles to the top of the thighs. They affect primarily women, and may be genetic, affecting several women in the same family.

Spider veins do not pose any major health problems, but may cause discomfort. Most people find them unsightly and attempt to cover them with clothing or cosmetics.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Aside from the genetic tendency, spider veins may be caused by trauma to legs caused by blows or falls, or extended period of standing or sitting. Many women first notice them after pregnancy, so added weight and hormones may also play a role in the development of the veins.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure performed in our Ageless Medical office for treatment of spider and varicose veins of the legs. A superfine needle is used to inject saline, a sterile solution of salt and water that resembles the body’s own fluids, into the veins.

This saline solution method is considered superior to surgery, electrocautery, (a method using an electric needle) and laser treatment.

Is the Sclerotherapy Procedure Painful?

Most people who have had sclerotherapy have experienced only slight discomfort. You may experience a slight to moderate burning sensation immediately after the injection which will disappear in a few seconds.

How Much Does the Treatment Cost, and is it Covered By Insurance?

The cost is related to the amount of time spent on your treatment. After your consultation with your medical practitioner, she will be able to give you a better idea of the cost based on your particular situation, but treatments are under $350.

Because this procedure is considered cosmetic in nature most insurance plans will not cover it.

When Can I Expect to See Results?

Each vessel usually requires 2 to 3 injections. Different vessels can be treated at the same session, but repeat injections are done a week or two after healing. The vessels disappear over a period of 2 weeks to 4 months!

Your body requires up to 6 months to resolve this condition. Your patience is important!

Are There Any Side Effects?

95% of the patients experience no adverse reactions to sclerotherapy, but some minor side effects have been reported. These include slight blistering when small amounts of the saline solution seep into the surrounding skin. This blistering heals quickly but may result in a small freckle-like pigmentation at the injection site. These spots usually resolve with time, or may be treated with bleaching agents.

Bruising will occasionally occur when the veins are unusually weak, but should disappear in several weeks. Sometimes a clot develops at the injection site. This is not a major cause for concern, but removal of the clot within 2 weeks will allow the healing process to progress normally.

Swelling may occur in patients who stand or sit for long periods of time. Although not dangerous, the swelling should be treated with elevation of the legs, and/or compresses.

Are There Any People Who Should Not Have This Treatment?

We prefer not to perform sclerotherapy in patients with a history of inflammation of the veins (thrombophlebitis) or blood clots in the legs. We do not treat patients with a history of diabetes, arterial or vascular problems in the legs, or leg ulcers. In such patients, any light trauma could start a leg ulcer.

There is no reason why patients with high blood pressure or other salt related problems cannot be treated, since the amount of saline used is small.

As with any procedure, please let your Medical Practitioner know, if any, medications you are currently taking.

When seeking spider veins treatment, patients should look for the least invasive options that the Davie, Cooper City, Pembroke Pines and Weston area has to offer.  IPL treatments and Sclerotherapy offer a great alternative to more invasive procedures.

Consultations are free. Please call with any questions or to book your consultation.

These guys do such a great job!! I’ve been to ageless Skin Medical Spa probably 4 or 5 times for facials. I have rosacea and haven’t had great luck finding some place that could help with it (darn Irish ancestors!!!). But after one facial with the Revitalight thingy, it was like a miracle had happened. Sadly I moved away from Florida…otherwise I’d definitely still be going.
